Taking the first step in your faith journey.

Following Jesus

Becoming a Disciple of Jesus

If you’ve recently decided to trust Jesus as Savior and Lord, you may start to wonder: What changes now? What does it look like to actually live this out day to day?

God already loves you and has offered forgiveness through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Discipleship is simply learning how to respond to that grace by living differently because of Jesus.

What we mean by “discipleship”

At FBC, we often talk about discipleship as an apprenticeship to Jesus: an apprentice learns by watching the teacher then by practicing it over and over. A disciple-apprentice is someone who regularly practices the way of Jesus in real life.

No two journeys look exactly the same, but we believe four key areas help all followers of Jesus grow.

Four core parts of following Jesus

1. Worship – gathering with God’s people

Worship is: the primary goal of the Christian life, a place to meet Jesus and be renewed, and where we remember and retell the story of God’s love.

👉 Plan to worship weekly with a congregation whenever possible.

2. Learning – growing in understanding and wisdom

Learning is not just memorizing facts. It means: getting to know Jesus’ life and teachings, discovering practices and tools that shape faith, asking questions, and growing together. At FBC, main opportunities for learning are: Sunday School before worship and Bible Study on Wednesday evenings.

3. Giving – practicing generosity

Jesus teaches that disciples live with open hands. Generosity can take many forms. Financial giving supports the ministry of the church. We often use the tithe (10%) as a goal, but: any amount matters. Giving helps us trust God rather than our money.

4. Service – meeting needs in Jesus’ name

Following Jesus also means serving others.

Examples include: Caring for children in the nursery, helping with church ministries, joining mission or service projects, and responding to needs in our community.

Serving shapes our hearts to look more like Christ.

The big picture:

Everyone’s journey is unique. No one grows perfectly or all at once. These four areas — worship, learning, giving, service — help us:

✔ put faith into practice

✔ grow into Christlikeness

✔ live as disciples in everyday life

If you’re just getting started, you don’t have to do everything at once. Pick one next step, and keep walking with Jesus. We’ll be here to walk with you on the journey.
